Translation:
Sukhadā :
Oh, (how) beautiful the plate for worshipping is! With the colourful flowers,
Durvā (Bermuda grass), Tulsi (Holy basil)leaves, Beal leaves, Ketaki (fragrant
Screwpine) leaves and Shami (prosopis cinararia) leaves also look charming (in
the puja plate).
Grandmother :
Oh Sukhadā, Our Indian culture is based on trees. At the beginning of
auspicious function, Nāgavalli (betel) leaves are absolutely essential. At the
entrance, festoon of mango leaves is the indicative of auspicious (occasion).
At the time of meals, leaves of banyan (tree) and palash (tree) are useful to
make leaf-plates. After a meal, eating betel quid is good for health. ( Tambul is a leaf of piper-betel
having areca-nut, catechu, chewed after meals - Apte Sanskrit Dictonary).
Avijita :
Oh Sukhadā and Nirajā, as grandmother is describing the significance of the
leaves, flowers and fruits of the tree,
similarly, my teacher described the importance of the trees on Environment Day
which was organised in our school.
Sukhadā:
Environment Day? It's a completely new idea for me.
Avijita:
Is it so? Every year on 5th June, Environment Day is celebrated. On
this day, this pledge of protecting the environment was taken by all of us.
" The Earth is our mother. Animal and birds, creepers, trees and flowers
are our relatives. We will always strive to respect (and) to enhance the nature
existing in my country."
Sukhadā:
Then for the balance of nature, trees should be grown. Trees save water sources.
Grandmother:
The trees soothe the heat of the earth. The underground water streams are found
under the branches of banyan (tree), fig (tree), Peepal etc. Therefore, it is
mentioned by Varāhmihir in the treatise named as ‘Brihatsamhitā’ that one should
always enhance and look after these trees.
Neerajā:
Even I know that if the forests are destroyed, then the atmosphere would be dry
due to scarcity of rain.
Avijita:
Accepting the message of Environment Day, remedies for protecting the
environment should be thought.
